Green Bubble–Green streets around schools

Trees planted on all the streets within 3-4 blocks of your school create a cool, green “bubble” of shade and fresh air for students walking, bicycling, or waiting for pick-ups. Opt-In below for trees to be planted near your school. Learn more about this grant and “opt-in” by using the QR code below.

Trees help kids focus and learn as well as improve their wellbeing. Schools can help ensure trees grow healthy by teaching students about the value of trees, or setting up adopt-a-tree programs for trees near schools.

These local organizations offer educational programs for school children in accordance with California’s Life Sciences curriculum:

  • South Bay Sustainable Communities
  • S&S Friendly Farms – Food forests educational curriculum
  • Tijuana Estuary (TRNERR)
  • Border Field State Park – Outdoor Youth Connection

Why? The City of San Diego is about to plant trees in your area (Otay Mesa- Nestor), through the Ready, Set, Grow! Grant. These trees will be planted and watered by the City for the first three years of their lives! It is important that community members have a say in where they want these trees.

Schools in the Green Bubble:

When and where?  If you are interested in walking around your neighborhood and analyzing potential sites for trees, let us know. Our interns are available to lead walks to recommend sites where trees will have long term success rates! We are also happy to connect you with other organizations that are working towards increasing the urban forest!

We are working with interns at South Bay Sustainable Communities to collect field data on tree planting sites in the Otay Mesa- Nestor area, to attend meetings about the Ready, Set, Grow San Diego project, and to work with other community groups.Google Forms for Feedback for Otay Mesa and Nestor
