Walk, sit or take a nap under a shade tree–solo or with family or friends. The spirit and strength of trees will bring energy and hope into the remainder of your day. Add trees to your daily lives, to live more sustainably and see the wonders of trees.
Join our intergenerational team. Support education and experiences of youth to explore professional interests in urban forestry. Attend some of the virtual/zoom intergenerational intern team meetings on Friday mornings (weekly or occasionally). Invite an intern to co-lead a project with you. Learn more about our local trees. Go on a Tree Trek, with Tree San Diego, view schedule. Set aside a Saturday morning for Tree Steward training.
Participate in tree planting events with Tree San Diego and various community groups. These are often funded by grants that focus on establishing trees in “disadvantaged” areas with few trees. But don’t forget about adding or advocating for trees in “advantaged” areas.
Care for your trees. Water your tree(s) deeply, in months that have no significant precipitation. Hire a Certified Arborist every few years to prune your trees and keep them healthy. your yard, deep water your tree.
Take a day to map your nearby parking lot, where you shop or work or at your children’s school. One of Kate’s interns can offer an overall briefing (by zoom), meet you in the parking lot and teach how to use GoogleMaps, and then add those tree locations and conditions to the regional parking lot tree survey. If you’re a member of an organization, start by thinking about ways that trees and climate action can meet your mission. Ask one of our urban foresters, arborists or interns to give a short presentation, easiest if you still meet virtually. Send an email with your request.
- Include paragraphs about trees in your newsletter, with text and links from Kate’s webpages.
- Suggest ways for your conservation committee or board to take climate action with trees. Identify ways to incorporate more trees into planning and design projects in your cities and communities.
- Submit or give comments at budget hearings in all of our cities, for urban forestry programs.
