As part of a presentation about root girdling and trees, Steven Stuverud is seen holding a baby loquat seedling, which is now the perfect size for re-planting. As you can see, the roots are longer than the aboveground stem. This will ensure that future lateral root development will be strong, and the seedling will not become girdled in a container. The more that roots can spread freely, the more drought resilient that trees can become.
